Newest Style: Acrylic Giraffe Painting

Giraffe Acrylic Painting by Apple Sprout StudiosThere is something so whimsical and lovely about this acrylic painting. I’m not sure if it’s the giraffe’s eyes or her almost smiling face that gives me such a great feeling when I look upon it.

This is my newest style being added to the Apple Sprout Studios shop on Etsy. Inspired by the mural I painted last March at the zoo, I felt an itch of sorts to continue on with the acrylic paints. More painterly, more free spirited.

So far I’ve added an African Lion and Elephant to accompany this print. In the future, I have ideas of grandeur – starting with adding some under the sea prints. I’m getting really excited to paint fish and manatees and coral.

But then I also still enjoy the watercolors so I’ve been fitting those in with my studio time too. It’s a balance like everything else! I want to paint them all at once, but alas, there is only so much time and I only have two hands. Foiled again!

Since these won’t paint themselves, I do need to head off to the studio. Be sure to check out the other acrylics and I’d love to know what you think! (Link to: New Acrylic Paintings in the Studio…)

Now, I’m off to sling some paint.

Winter Wonderland

By the Stream by Apple Sprout Studios

This is what it looked like when we ventured back into the great northern territory of Ohio after spending some time with family and friends in a much warmer, not-so-snowy state down south.

Though it was difficult to leave the sun, if we had to return to some sort of landscape, this was quite a beautiful one to land in. The photo above is from a small stream that runs in our backyard. It’s a favorite for the mallard ducks.

Reminder of fall leaf by apple sprout studiosAs we, I mean my husband, were shoveling the wet and heavy snow, he shouted over to me to come see this funny sight. A little fall sweet gum leaf had finally managed to fall off the tree in time for winter – and in time for a shovel to come and whisk it away into a four foot pile of snow! This photo reminds me of a fossil so I love it.

Hope your snow piles are melting as fast as ours on this warm (for Ohio in January), sunny day in Ohio!

Over and out!

Happy New Year!

Holiday CookiesI hope you had a wonderful couple of holidays these past few weeks!
After visiting my in-laws on New Year’s Day, we returned with a bounty of cookie deliciousness (pictured above).

That’s the first layer of cookies and there are about three more below. I see a lot of exercising in my future if I don’t want my waist line to expand to Tim-buk-tu.

How was your holiday? Do you have yummy treats like these adorning your counter tops too?

Trying to find some motivation to hop on the treadmill,

Cardinal coloring page for the winter weather

Cardinal Coloring Page with Red Background

We’re lucky that here in the middle of Ohio, the snow, wind and rain has not been as bad as on the east coast. I’ve only been in a few hurricanes when I lived down in Florida, but none of the Category 1-2 storms I experienced were close to this. My thoughts are with everyone out east! Stay safe.

Weather Map with hurricane

The snow came a little early this year thanks to hurricane Sandy. This Florida girl never thought she’d being saying those words in the same sentence. Can you find Ohio under all that colorful weather? It’s in there, I promise. Brrr…

Since it is best to avoid such weather by staying indoors, or at least that is always my plan, here is a cardinal coloring page to keep you busy. A cardinal, the quintessential wintertime animal. So striking against the freshly fallen snow.

Enjoy and I hope you get to be creative today!

It’s a jumble

pumpkins

Ahh, the beautiful colors of fall. Lately I have craving pumpkin pies whenever I see a pumpkin. That’s starting to be a problem since there are about five sitting in front of my house.

fall tree

I took this photo a few days ago, perhaps even over the weekend, but it’s becoming a regular sight as the sun rises. The sunlight makes the yellow and red leaves sparkle. Glorious!

red wing black bird

We’ve had a new bunch of visitors in the backyard recently. Every fall and winter, a number of red winged black birds hang out and make their home nearby. So far they haven’t been staying all day long, but they are here in the early morning.

If I were to leave the window open at night, they would provide my morning wake up call. Who needs a rooster with these pretty birds around?

robins in tree

The robins are back too. They prefer to hang out in the tops of the trees. They happen to be more quiet guests too.

sleeping bearded dragon

And on an unrelated note, here is our bearded dragon sleeping. I was turning off her light when I noticed how awkwardly she was positioned so I thought I’d share.

How she doesn’t get a neck cramp in the morning is beyond me.

cardinal watercolor painting

Later today this character of a cardinal will be posted on my shop page. Talk about personality. When I started sketching him, I absolutely knew he had to be painted. Just a few more details need to be added and he’ll be up and ready.

Personalized Print with Truck

For the rest of the day, I’ll be working on this truck along with the remainder of the print that goes with it. I’ve been wanting to do a personalized collection and have started to put some ideas together. It’s looking great so far!

That’s a bit of what’s been going on here – a bit of a jumble. Hope you’re having beautiful weather and creative days too!

Four Fall Ideas for Instant Festivity

This past weekend, along with yesterday, I found myself working on new ideas and paintings for the shop. All the while, the sun was shining through the red and yellow leaves and it left me with a want to decorate for fall.

Because my creative energies have been diverted in a few different directions, I went browsing around the web to see who had creative fall decorating ideas to share. Here are a few of the fun crafts I stumbled upon:

1. Vintage Paper Wreath by MarthaStewart.com

Vintage Paper Leaf Wreath

I’m not sure I have vintage paper around, but it could replicated by dunking a few pieces of new paper in water with steeping tea bags. I liked that this craft could be easily done with children and could go almost anywhere in my home. Beautiful creamy color!

2. Fall Photography Grouping by Designer Layla Palmer on HGTV.com

Changing up artwork speaks to me as an artist. Why always look at the same photos, paintings or prints year-round? I like the idea of using unexpected artwork, as shown here, to create a fall-inspired wall. Not to mention, it’s a great economical way to decorate on the fly!

3. Pumpkin Topiary by Southern Living Magazine

Halloween Pumpkins Topiary

I have many weaknesses when it comes to photos and sparkly evening photos is one of them! How inviting, charming, adorable and whimsical is this topiary? It just exudes the fall time feeling. Twinkly, bright and festive – love it!

4. Fall Tree Decorations at Good Housekeeping.com

Photo: Michael Partenio

Since elementary school, I have loved these little trees. Maybe this comes from the infamous Charlie Brown Christmas tree? I’m not sure, but I do know that I love the craft creations hanging from the branches. Those pumpkin ornaments are clementines, the bats, owls and cats are pinecones wrapped in varying degrees of felt. These little ornaments are perfect to do with kids and look at the fun statement it makes!

Side note – I also love that jar of candy corn. Candy corn is my weakness.

Have fun creating and decorating! Hopefully I’ll be getting around to creating a few of these soon. Maybe this week, maybe before Thanksgiving? Soon, hopefully soon.

More and more paintings!

Duckling Kids Wall Art by Apple Sprout Studio

This week the paint has been flying, in a good way of course. Earlier in the week I finished up the pond theme animals. Simply adorable.

As of yesterday, I finished up the deer and the elk paintings as well.

Deer Wall Art watercolor print by Apple Sprout Studios

This little deer has so much personality, don’t you think? I was able to capture that classic stare as the deer realize they are standing far enough away not to run, but a little too close for comfort. So they stomp. Then stare. Then maybe stomp some more. Then as I walk closer, they zoom off in rush of flagging tails.

I just love that curious, ‘and what do you think you’re doing’ look. Ha!

Elk Watercolor Print Art by Apple Sprout Studios

To be completely honest, I don’t have much first hand experience (read: none) with elk. Sure I’ve seen elk on those great nature shows, but the closest I’ve been to one of these beautiful animals is a caribou also known as Rudolph. But they’re gorgeous nonetheless!

Duckling Kids Wall Art by Apple Sprout Studio

And here we have the duckling. Little ducklings are my favorite during springtime. Well, really they are my favorite anytime, but I love the ones that visit in our backyard during springtime. They are so fuzzy, so waddle-y, and so snuggle-y looking (I do not know first hand if they’re snuggly, because that would upset Mom duck and I’m not about to do that).

This painting captures all of the cuteness into one little picture that will never grow up to become a big Mallard duck. It gets to stay yellow and fluffy forever. Hooray for little ducklings!

All of these prints are available on our Etsy shop if you’d like to head over and take a little shopping trip! Hooray for shopping!

Kitchen Inventory: Photo Edition

mason jar

Shortly before making dinner, the sun was angled in just the right way to shine gloriously inside this otherwise ordinary mason jar creating amazing light displays. Sparkles – a girl’s best friend!

The dramatic lighting inspired me to snap a few other photos of items around the kitchen. I’m a big fan of chiaroscuro and take every opportunity to use it! Long live chiaroscuro!

basil

Basil leaf – so dynamic, so scrumptious.

measuring cups

Measuring cups – so stainless steel and organized. Reflections never cease to amaze. More sparkle too.

succulent

Whimsical succulent – so happy to be inside from the cold, so puffy and desert-like. Wonderful flowing, organic lines.

garlic head from the bottom

Head of garlic – the bottom half, amazing texture and lines, what a piece of artwork on its own, those wrinkles tell me it has tales to tell.

Three new additions

new animals in apple sprout studios shop

For the past week I’ve been painting and assembling painted paper pieces into three new relief animal prints.

More than a week ago, I was asked if I could paint a few pond theme animals for a nursery.  I loved the idea of a pond theme and I especially loved the animals they picked!

Largemouth Bass watercolor by Apple Sprout Studios

This is the Largemouth bass watercolor print. It came out so well! The variation in the body’s color along with the lighter fins made me thrilled with the result.

Painted Turtle watercolor by apple sprout studios

Next was painting the Painted Turtle. This is my husband’s favorite. He loves the colors. I love the striking look of the turtle. Layering the scoots of the shell created a nice effect.

wood duck watercolor by apple sprout studios

And here is the Wood Duck. These are my favorite ducks. It is my goal to see a Wood duck before I move from Ohio. How stunning of an animal to be hanging out around our lakes and ponds!

You can take a closer look at these three over on our shop page or our Etsy page!

Two more animals will be coming to the shop later this week – an elk and white-tailed deer. Can’t wait!

Because it’s Friday

green grass

Ah, look at that beautiful grass. All of those green leaves. I love summer. Please come back summer. I miss you already.

This morning I was being curious and investigatory while roaming around in the files stored on my hard drive. “What is in this folder?” I asked myself since the folder’s name was ambiguous: ’9.24 Photos.’ That’s a less than helpful title.

Because it’s Friday, I’ll share with you the folder’s photos. They are a, let’s say, random grouping, but I’ll try to narrate. If I can put the randomness into an order. I’ll try in earnest.

Photo 1 (above): This was from our time house sitting for friends who live on 10 acres of beautiful land. Ah, green. I probably took the photo knowing I would need it for the winter. I was right.

deer in winter

Photo 2: Then we are shown what comes only during winter – snow. Look at those adorable deer though. These were juveniles and this photo was also taken at our friend’s property. These cute face were captured by my husband’s photography skills.

cardinals

Photo 3: He also took this photo. I remember not wanting to brave the cold, or chill, or falling wet snow, or leave the comfort of a warm blanket. But I appreciate that he did because this cardinal photo is great!

Thanks, love. Thanks for understanding that I’m from Florida and nearly cry when it gets this cold.

winter

Photo 4: I did manage to get out in the snow for this photo. It was a requirement for me to leave the warm home because our cars were trapped in the garage; we needed to shovel ourselves out. At least the scenery made it tolerable. Okay, maybe more than tolerable.

It’s a bit like a fairy tale don’t you think?

me with a bear cub

Photo 5: This was the next photo in the folder. This was not on our friend’s property, but rather at my friend’s house from the zoo. She had ‘bear watch’ duty for the evening so she asked if we’d like to see the black bear cubs. Come to think of it, it might have also been for reinforcements.

Baby bears are cute, but they are notoriously the most high energy, rambunctious baby animals you could imagine caring for – that’s of any animal in the world – they have a reputation. That night, in all fairness, they did what comes naturally for them to do: climb, run, bite, climb, chew, explore, ram, climb, claw, and then pull down all of the books from the bookshelf along with the phone books and tear them to shreds all in a matter of one minute.

I don’t joke about this, it’s true. And she was taking care of two! Now I understand why Mama bears are so tough and tired looking. After this night, I had a new respect. And a few puncture wounds in my hand. Their energy was impressive. I’ll leave this job for the professionals and for bears. It leaves me exhausted just remembering it all.

I was attempting to feed the one above. It looks a bit precarious because it was. To calm them down, it helps to place your hand over their eyes so they can focus on drinking the milk. It was quite the feat, but all was well in the end.

husband with bear

My husband was a jungle gym that night. They would attempt to climb his legs, but he wasn’t keen on their claws piercing his skin. Then he would try to encourage them down, then they might think he was playing and proceed to bite and scratch. Then they would hop back on his legs for more playtime. Then he said, “when does this end” after it went on for five minutes. Then they climbed the side of the sofa and paraded across his lap to attempt to climb on a table to try and knock over a lamp.

That’s why I leave it to my friends, the professionals, to take on such tasks. Just keep inviting me over for an hour to take photos okay? Great, thanks!
